The ultimate stress-free packing experience would be one offered by your moving company, for sure.  Hire them, bring them in, and they pack for you… But 99% of the time, this is not the case.  Most people run out, buy their boxes, and get to packing up their stuff.  Besides, only you know the more valuable, sentimental, and cherished items from the others.  Me, I am a bit obsessive-compulsive, so I would want to pack everything myself the way that I want to.  Besides, after moving no less than eight times in my life, I think I’ve become pretty good at it…  But, prior to packing “everything” for a move, there are things you should do to make your pack more “stress-free.”

Organize and Get Rid of Stuff

Trust me.  Decluttering your home and getting rid of the items you really don’t need will make your life easier.  Example:

  • The 12-year-old pillows on your couch with worn covers that you bought when you were in college.
  • The old blender you replaced with a Ninja or Vitamix
  • The old pair of sneakers that have been sitting in the back of your closet
  • The old lawn furniture that may not be right in the back yard or has about had it due to using over the years,

Really, making the decision to get rid of items will literally liberate you and make you less stressed about how you may get items to your new home, increased costs, and or whether or not items may be the right fit for the new space.

Get rid of anything broken that cannot be repaired you do not need.  Sell stuff on Offer Up, Craigslist, or Facebook Marketplace, to recoup a little cash for your moving costs…

Overdo the Packing Supplies

Seriously.  Again, I have done this enough to know, you never, ever, buy enough boxes, bubble wrap, plastic wrap, etc. the first time you bring them home.  You will almost always go back to the store to purchase more of them.  If you think you need 5 boxes, buy seven.  If you think one roll of packing tape is enough, buy two, etc.  It doesn’t matter if you have extras.  You may use them for storage at your new home for the attic or basement, or you can turn around and sell them.  Someone will buy them because of the sheer number of people that are looking for moving supplies at any given time.

Don’t standardize on one size box either, especially large boxes.  Do you know how heavy an extra-large box of kitchen supplies can be?  Will that box be safe?  Get smaller boxes for different packing options.

Buy more than you think you’ll need.  Trust me on this one…

Get Organized…

Yes, you heard it.  This is critical to helping you minimize the stress of packing and having a deadline to move. The more organized you can become early in the process, the less stress you will endure.  Here are a few tips to getting organized….

  • Label your boxes before you start and put them in their designated rooms.
  • Color-code each box in each room or label them for breakables
  • Create an inventory per room that you want to pack and a list of items you wish to get rid of.
  • Use a spreadsheet to keep track of boxes and belongings, by numbering each box for each row or column in the spreadsheet.

Get creative to make your life easier going into the process and at the exit of the process when you are unpacking.

Research “How to Pack”

You might find it silly, but there are literally hundreds, and maybe thousands of videos on YouTube for how to pack belongings, your kitchen, etc. that will make your life more efficient in the process of packing.  Click this link and you’ll learn more in just a few short minutes:  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+pack+for+moving.  Don’t know how to pack your shoes, there’s a video for that.

One bit of advice we can give is that you should start the process no less than a month or more in advance… If you know you are moving in 90 days, start offloading the items you do not want to bring with you, selling them, disposing of them, or giving them away.  Once you have done that, you’ll be able to assess what you will “need” to be packing up.  Start packing 30 days ahead of time.  Why a month and not a couple weeks.  From experience the following may affect your packing:

  • Work schedule,
  • Holidays & family obligations
  • Budget
  • Weather
  • Car problems
  • Health issues

The list can go on.  You want to give yourself ample time to pack to keep yourself from being stressed out.
