The Risks of a Do It Yourself Move | Hercules Movers | NJ Movers

It doesn’t matter if you are moving across town, to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, or Florida, you always have the option of doing it yourself.  It’s tempting.  Trust us.  It’s our business to know.  I mean, it seems reasonable to want to try and save a few dollars because moving can be an expensive venture, especially if you just bought your first home…

Two things we here often when those that are moving look to save a few dollars are:

  • Save time
  • Save money

But, does renting a truck, enlisting help (if you have it), and doing it yourself really help you bypass saving money and time?  After all, they say time “is” money, and if you have to take time out of your workday or the weekend to move what did you really save?  You just traded your downtime for hours of back-breaking labor for yourself.  If you’ve been thinking about a do it yourself move, you should look at the workload, the time, the effort of those helping you, etc. Other factors in your move are:

The Safety of Your “Stuff”

Ask yourself this question, “Do you trust yourself, and your friends to handle, carry, stack, unstack, handle, and carry again, all your electronics, breakables, and other items without breakage?”  One of the biggest risks in a do it yourself move is the damage of your own goods.  A fully bonded and insured moving company is insured to move your belongings.  By choosing a company such as Hercules Movers, you get professional movers that perform these jobs up to 1,000 times a year, you get a fully insured service in the event of a mishap.

What is it going to cost you if that 65-inch flat-screen falls off of the top of your stuff in your own Do It Yourself move?  The trip to Costco or wherever you may have purchased it, to purchase the latest model for $1,000+ dollars over what you just paid to move.  You could have hired the moving company for the rental and the cost of the television…

Which Brings us to Experienced Movers…

If you’ve ever moved an entire home before, or even hired movers to move an entire home you should be aware of a few things:

  1. Driving a large rental van or moving truck around town with all your stuff can be HARD. If you are not used to maneuvering a large vehicle you are going to have to be EXTRA careful you don’t damage the truck or another vehicle.  What would this cost you financially?  Think on that for a moment or two.  An experienced driver has no issue backing up a large vehicle or getting around tighter corners.
  2. As mentioned earlier, do you want to leave your curved 65” 4K QLED television to just anyone? If you are going to spend all the extra time trying to figure out how to pack all your stuff, safely, just remember time is money, and broken possessions are more money…  If you accidentally pack your dinner plates on the bottom of 350 pounds of other items, you may have an issue, wrapped in bubble wrap or not…  Why not leave it to an experienced team?

The Right Gear for the Job

If you’ve not done it all before, and know what you need, meaning, moving blankets, rope, extra boxes, ramps, dollies, and more, you may want to leave it to a moving company. Nothing is worse than having to stop a move, because you have to run to the big box hardware store and buy a dolly because you forgot to rent a couple of extra ones for the move… Time and money… Time and money… What is it worth to you?  You may not want to nickel and dime yourself by having to go buy extra gear, bubble wrap, moving blankets, etc. just because you miscalculated… A professional moving company can get this right the first time for you.

Lest We Mention Stress

We would be remiss if we did not indicate the number one reason, we think Do It Yourself moves should be avoided at all costs.  It’s not enough you have to start packing and disrupting your normal routine with your family at least a month ahead of time.  You’ll be putting things in boxes “hoping” you don’t need them over the course of and prior to your move.  You still have to work, you still have a normal family routine, etc. Now add in the time daunting task of packing and stacking boxes out of the way until moving day.

You may want to think about using a professional moving company at that point… A moving company can take the stress of scheduling the rental truck, picking it up, hoping your buddies can make it to help you with your move, etc. A professional moving company will bring the team with them to move you right the first time and protect your belongings correctly.  With Hercules Movers, you can expect the most professional of commitment to your move from a very reputable organization that’s been moving New Jersians for years.
